The house was already unlocked. A cold wind blew from the direction of Brüderstraße, and feathery snowflakes fluttered in the air... Now she made her way toward the bridge to Spittelmarkt. The only person in sight was the lamplighter; he ran ahead of her with his long, narrow ladder, and when he reached the top, he would look down at her, half sly and inquisitive, not quite knowing what to make of her.
